\"ACAIn January Mission Bay Aquatic Center hosted a Stand Up Paddle Instructor Certification Workshop led by American Canoe Association (ACA) Instructor Trainer Jose Gonzalez.\u00a0 In addition to the MBAC paddling instructors, participants included paddlers of various backgrounds looking to increase their skill level of stand up paddleboard instruction.\u00a0 Their dedication to learning these skills was quickly apparent when weather forced them to battle rough winds and rain throughout the week of training. Together, they powered through the conditions and proved their commitment to bring their \u201cA-game\u201d as an instructor. \u00a0<\/p>\n

While the weather was a hurdle for the week of the training, the group didn\u2019t let that discourage their desire to learn and enhance their teaching skills. Aaron Merris, who earned his ACA Level 2 SUP Instructor Certification commented, \u201cPeople decide to pursue SUP for a variety of reasons.\u00a0 Some might just want to be more comfortable on the water while others are looking for interesting ways to be active outside.\u00a0 Many of our students hope to begin SUP surfing or start racing.\u00a0 This course reminded me that it is my job to be aware of my students\u2019 backgrounds and goals so that I can help them safely accomplish them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"SUPsOverall, the course was a productive bonding experience that will allow our instructors to support each other as a team and help us build the confidence of our students.\u00a0 ACA Instructor Trainer Jose Gonzalez covered topics that are essential to helping experienced instructors refine their skills, develop their teaching approach, and stay up-to-date with what\u2019s new in the world of stand up paddleboarding.\u00a0 Jose stated, \u201cThe richness of the course comes from not only the rigorous standards set by the ACA, but the wealth of experience each candidate brings to the course.\u201d<\/p>\n
