{"id":1723,"date":"2017-05-07T23:01:28","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T06:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mbaquaticcenter.com\/news\/?p=1723"},"modified":"2019-04-20T16:39:55","modified_gmt":"2019-04-20T23:39:55","slug":"stem-concepts-highlighted-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mbac.com\/news\/2017\/05\/stem-concepts-highlighted-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM concepts to be highlighted at camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1725\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mbaquaticcenter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reach.jpg\" alt=\"STEM through Sailing\" width=\"600\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mbac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reach.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mbac.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reach-275x178.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>From sailing, to surfing, to marine science, attendees of The Watersports Camp have always enjoyed experiential and inquiry based learning in all of our camps.\u00a0 This summer, we are particularly excited to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) components into our sailing and afternoon multi-sport camp curriculum.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nIn our sailing instructional camps, US Sailing&#8217;s STEM-friendly Reach curriculum will blend daily sailing with investigating the forces at work in and around the boat.\u00a0 Afternoon multi-sport campers will benefit from hands-on experiential learning and exposure to STEM concepts on their sailing and marine science afternoon, all while enjoying the same programming centered on fun that defines The Watersports Camp.<\/p>\n<p>MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick, believes that expanding camp&#8217;s fun and exciting programming to serve as a vehicle for inspiring interest in science, technology, engineering and math is a no-brainer (pun intended?).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;STEM concepts have always been included as a huge part of learning to sail, surf, or do any watersport,&#8221; says Waldick.\u00a0 &#8220;What Reach is enabling us to do is to is helping apply what kids traditionally learn in books to real world experiences that they can really connect with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reach.ussailing.org\/\">Reach<\/a> is a US Sailing national education initiative to inspire sailing programs and schools to utilize sailing as a STEM educational platform.\u00a0 MBAC will be piloting a classroom visit\/on-the- water Reach program this fall to benefit the community and create new avenues for youth sailing participation.\u00a0 The program will consist of 5-6 classroom visits culminating in a field trip to MBAC for on-the-water sailing instruction.\u00a0 For information on how your classroom can\u00a0participate in the pilot program email MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick, at <span \n                data-original-string='xSOmYw46om0aOcw0IU1ojA==301+oSbJ0QG7AEBfKyx51A\/XbNX85kcpVtYT+TzkSV9ZGc='\n                class='apbct-email-encoder'\n                title='This contact has been encoded by Anti-Spam by CleanTalk.
